Quote of the Day: "Mr. Lukens, you are the smartest math teacher ever."

Monday, April 24, 2006

I've been hearing a lot of complaints from parents/other relatives that my students who are involved in strength and conditioning have been slipping in the classroom. I figure that the most logical thing to do then is some nice old pyramid pushups and stair suicides. This is intended to show them that classwork is the easiest, most relaxing thing they could ever partake in compared to our strength and conditioning program. Only if I could get every student in the school to participate in the program...

Quote of the Day (phenominal!!!): Me: "What does lecture mean?"
Kharlief: "To give someone tough love."

It's official: This is absolutely the most tiring day of my life. Not only do I have lesson plans to turn in for next week (haven't even started them), but I have a grad school paper due today (haven't started either) and TONS of stuff to grade. This is all aside from my IEP and Re-evaluation paperwork that is due in the upcoming weeks. My solution: Dark Horse after grad class.

Quote of the day:

Student who barged into my classroom: "Old Head, you hype!"

Me (not in the best of moods): "Yea, I know. And you're gonna see how hype I can get if you don't get out of my classroom in the next 2 seconds."

Today I'm actually really excited that my students seemed to pick up probability!!!! The students I teach generally aren't able to grasp higher-level skills or those that may be even moderately abstract. For whatever reason, though, probability is one that they take a liking to (I wish I had when I was in school). The week is almost over, and I'm soooo excited to dedicate my weekend to "grad" school. I've just recently come to the conclusion that I must do what is best for my personal well being, thus I may opt to skip a significant portion of these expensive, mindless courses. 70 degrees and sunny...aint

Quote of the Day:

Student #1: "How do you spell description?"

Student #2: "D-I-S-Z-N"

I find it so difficult to have an entire fun-filled week off of school and come back to the madness... Anyhow, attendance is still quite low, and I'm anxious to see if it gets worse as the spring progresses. I hear that hardly any students come in the month of June. I still don't quite understand why my students think that there are no responsibilities and obligations when it gets nice outside...

Quote of the day: "Get outta my face."

Finally back from spring break after a wonderful road trip to the Dirty South. Unbelievable times... Boy is today tiring!!! The attendance is low because it's a Monday, but the students are still very energetic.

Quote of the day: S+C student: "Mr. Lukens, I can't make it today. I have a date."

Me: "S+C is mandatory, and I don't know if I believe that you actually have a date. You have to be
determined."

S+C student: "Don't worry, I'll be getting my workout..."

Me: "I don't want to hear about it."

Easy but draining day. Teaching LCD to my students is sooooo tiring. So many questions, so much confusion...

Quote of the day: Student: "Mr. Lukens, Dante went into my pockets and took stuff."
Me: "What did he take?"
Student: "I don't remember what was in there."

After an entire week of being sick, I'm finally back to school in full force. Since today was rainy--not to mention the fact that it's Monday--I maintained a 50% attendance rate almost across the board. Though it makes my life a little tougher for the next few days because they have to catch up, I really, really enjoy the complete silence in my room. I also enjoy being able to zip through difficult concepts (i.e. simplifying fractions) with some of my lower-level students. My goal by Friday: Probability!!!!

Quote of the day: "Mr. Lukens, did this quiz bring me up to a C?" -student with an approximate grade of 30%
